transport >> SMTP Auth failure

by Jessica » Tue, 12 Aug 2003 22:35:12 GMT

Hello all

I had a working Exch2k server which I had to move to
another physical server. All of that is fine. I also had
to change the SMTP host name as we were not allowed to use
the old one anymore. Now, I can receive email, but not
able to send out. If I look at SMTP Queue they are piled
there. Looking at the properties of eavh queued item
reveal the message ("The remote SMTP service rejected AUTH
negotiation."). I have contacted the ISP and verified that
all the details are correct. I even tried direct
connection to ISP from Outlook express to verify the
settings are correct. Why am I getting this error message.

Any ideas? I would be grateful. I am rather desperate.

Many thanks.

Jessica

1. SMTP Auth failure

Hi,

If understand your issue, you are forwarding to a smarthost for your
outbound mail. To help narrow down what could be causing the issue, I have
a few questions.

How do you have this configured? Is it on an SMTP connector?

Does this smarthost require authentication for you to drop mail to them or
do they just accept mail from your domain?

If it requires authentication, how do you have it configured to
authenticate?

Best Regards,
Beth

3. Strange AUTH failure with SMTP connector

Hey Karlheinz,

Is the smarthost local to your site or is it at the ISP's end ? Do you
have any firewalls between your Exchange server and smarthost ? If so
make sure there are no SMTP proxies running on it. You may wanna check
KB 320027 which talks about this.
Also can you do a telnet smarthost 25 and send mail via the telnet
session ? If this works , you may wanna consider running a netmon
trace and repro the problem to capture it in the netmon trace. I can
analyse it for u incase you need help on that.

Also disable any 3rd party products on the Exchange server and make
sure there is no sort of filtering happening on any routers, switches
along the way to the smarthost.

5. SMTP AUTH attack possible on E2K7?

I was looking through this site and noticed somebody with an SMTP AUTH attack
post. It got my curiosity and I started looking around the web to see what I
could find out about it and its implications to E2K7. All that I found was
E2K and E2k3 references. Is is still possible to have this type of attack on
Exchange 2007 (edge server) and if so, how do you protect yourself from it?
Thanks for any info or comments.
