transport >> 8BITMIME/7BITMIME : what is the gain ?

by FE » Tue, 19 Aug 2003 22:15:52 GMT

Hi,

I would like if there is a document that describes the gain of 8BITMIME
compared with 7BITMIME in term of WAN traffic.

For example :
If SMTP1 send a message of 1 Mo to SMTP2 through a wan link, what is the
trafic generated if :

* Both server use 7BITMIME
* Both of them use 8BITMIME
I would like to have an ide of the % saved by 8BITMIME

Thanks for your help.

1. Turning off 8bitmime

Hello,

We get a lot of bounces from a particular domain that we send to a lot: "554
5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host". I understand it's because
the remote domain apparently doesn't support 8bitmime. If I stop our Ex2k3
server from advertising 8bitmime according to MS Q257569, does that mean
that it will generate the same errors when another email server or clients
try to send in that format? Under what conditions do clients send in
8bitmime? The latest incident was sent to a large list with a .doc
attached.

Thanks,
Matt

3. Exchange 2003, disable 8bitMIME, 5.6.1 error

Currently we are consolidate another exchange 5.5
organistation (old.com with 3 exchange 5.5 servers) to
our Exchange 2003 organisation (new.com with 5 exchange
2000/2003 servers). We configure our exchange 2003 server
to accept internet emails for old.com and forward it to
the exchange 5.5 server. Most emails did route correctly,
but some emails got bounced with error 5.6.1, we think it
is cause by some 8 bitmime messages, to solve this
problem we want to disable the ESMTP verb "8bitMIME" in
our mail gateway, this gateway is a exchange 2003 server.

I'm not sure what the impact will be for other Exchange
2000 or 2003 servers if we disable the 8bitMIME ESMTP
verb. I did search some technet articles but I cannot
find any indepth detail about this issue. According to
the KB257569, disable ESMTP verb it might breaking
normail mail flow between servers (exchange 2000).

Does anyone disable 8bitmime verb on Exchange 2003
server? And did it affect mailflow ???

With regards,
Stefan

Does anybody have any practical guidance regarding the

Thanks.
