transport >> 2nd E2K Server can send mail to first but can't receive mail back

by Connie » Sat, 04 Oct 2003 02:09:44 GMT

Just installed a second exchange server in domain with two
sites (first server is KERMIT (been only exchange server
for quite some time), 2nd is GONZO (brand new)).

Created a mailbox on GONZO for a user and sent a test
message to a user whos mailbox resides on KERMIT and was
received successfully. Tried to reply to message and
message never received by user on GONZO. Also tried to
send a new message from KERMIT to user on GONZO...no luck.

Single routing group, both servers show up as members.

I'm sure I'm missing a step here but I'm not sure what it
is. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Connie,

Are the messages queueing on the KERMIT server? If so, go into the
properties of the SMTP queue and check the status. This will often provide
additional clues as to the problem. Also, do you have DNS records set up
for GONZO on the DNS servers?

Thanks for the rapid response!

On Kermit, when I go to Exch System Mgr, First Admin Grp,
Servers, KERMIT, Protocols, SMTP, Default SMTP, Queues,
and I highlight and queue (including gonzo.ipsc.ua.edu
(remote delivery)), in the right side panel it
says "enumerate messages from the queue node" (not sure
what that message is telling me and it's the only thing
there).

Additionally, instead of a green checkmark over the queue
folder icon, there is a white circle with a blue arrow
circling to the right. Does this mean anything?

Thanks,
C.

Connie,

The blue arrow is an indication the queue is in a retry state. If you
right-click on the queue folder, there is an option called Properties.
Click on that. In the next dialog window, there will be a status field.
Here it will likely say the queue is in a retry state. There is another
field below this that will sometimes provide additional clues to the
problem. Do you see anything there?

Hi Connie,

Are you still having this problem? The connection was dropped by remote
host can have different root causes including:

- corrupt SMTP configuration/metabase on Exchange server
- packets dropped by firewalls or routers
- 3rd party filtering programs installed on Exchange server (i.e. an example
is GFI Mail Essentials)

To check the SMTP configuration, follow the steps in the following article:

XIMS: Cannot Send Mail After Re-Installing the IIS SMTP Service
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb ;en-us;290290

If all the SMTP verbs are present, this might be a networking problem. You
can use tools such as telnet and netmon to troubleshoot this scenario. For
more information about these utilities:

I just installed a second Exchange 2000 server and moved my mailbox to it.

I can send messages to users whose mailboxes are on the first server, but they

If I telnet to the second server on port 25, I see the SMTP banner.

Any ideas what is happening here?

3. Can't receive mail without 2nd mailbox store mounted

Hi y'all. We are replacing our Exchange 2000 server with Exchange 2003 on a
different server, then removing the Exchange 2000 server from the
organization. I installed Exchange 2003 SP2 and moved all mailboxes and
rehomed public folders, etc, everything outlined in kb 822931 short of
uninstalling 2000. However, when I unmount the mailbox store on the old 2000
server, I can't send/receive anything. The only 2 mailboxes left on the old
server are the System Attendant and the SMTP mailbox, which can't be moved
anyway. Why would sending/receiving on a separate server be dependent on a
bascially empty mailbox store on another? Any help is appreciated!

Hello,

I have one e-mail domain working for incoming and outgoing e-mails to
