transport >> 2k server can recieve mail from 5.5 but not from another 2k server

by Seth » Fri, 15 Aug 2003 01:39:00 GMT

I have a very strange problem that i have been unable
to solve. I have 3 exchange servers, one 5.5 (server A)
one Exchange 2k server that has been in production appx 6
months (server B) and one new 2k server (server C). Im
migrating off the 5.5 server. All the servers are in the
same organization. So i setup a new 2k server and mail
sent from anyone on the 5.5 server (server A) is
delivered fine to server C. But anyone on Server "B" that
sends messages to server C, it gets hung up in the smtp
queue and then after 3 days sends an NDR. SMTP traffic is
wide open between all the 3 servers, no strange dns or
other issues. Just for grins, i rebuilt server C, same
problem. And, i setup a new 2k server thinking that
server B might be the problem. Nope, still unable to send
mail to server C. Mail between A and B works fine.

Is there something im missing?? My environment is
really cut and dry. If someone could shed a bit of light,
theres a steak dinner in it for ya ;)

Hi Seth,

While there can be many causes of this the first thing I would look at is
what is between the 2 Servers? Any switches or more importantly is there a
firewall between them? Can you do a Telnet from Server B to Server C and see
the Exchange banner from Server C or is it a firewall that answers?

Thanks, you put me in the right state of mind. I could
reach the server on port 25, but it turns out i had to
change an acl on the concentrator that was allowing the
smtp traffic, but stripping the header information. That
fixed it. Works perfectly now. Thanks!

Thanks. I have read the SP levels and that is not a problem, I'm just trying
to minimize the impact of the upgrade without rebuilding the whole
infrastructure and do a gradual migration.

3. Exchange 2K7/Server 2K8 coexist with Exchange 2K/Server 2K Domain

4. Installing new Exchange 2K server to replace old 2K server

It is time to replace my old Exchange 2K server. I have another W2K server
on my network with Win 2K SP4 and all the currect updates. Both servers are
DC's with a single Domain environment.

My existing E2K server was installed clean 3 years ago no upgrade.

I installed E2K on the new server and received this error:
Sub-component COM+ raised an exception while processing the
OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION setup message.

..\csetuputil.cpp (line 3419)

Error Code = 0x8007007f

Refering to the microsoft knowledgebase I was able to reinstall the COM+ and
resolve this error but when I reinstalled I received another error below:

Setup failed while Configuring registry entries for Information Store
Service (error 0x80072030: There is no such object on the server.)

When I reboot the server I no longer had my Information store or SMTP VS's

I tried to uninstall but every attempt has failed.

I have tried every MS article I have found concearning these erros but
nothing has worked.

I tried to reinstall and get the same error and end up with out an
information store or SMTP VS.

Where to go from here???

Thanks for any help.

6. Moving Exchange 2k to new Exchange 2k server

I have an Exchange 2k server. Two hard drives (one for OS
and one for data). Both are quickly running out of space
and the hardware is slow. I want to upgrade my hardware
(faster computer, & larger hard drives), but I want to
stick with Exchange 2k for now. What is the best way to
go about this?

Also, in looking at the way this server was setup, I
don't understand where the m:/exchange drive exists. Do
all Exchange servers have a m:/exchange drive. It seems
to be part of the C: drive (always has exactly the same
space used as if they were mirrored) but different data.
Can you explain?

Thanks,

8. New 2k Server with Exchange 2k crashed after install

I installed a fresh copy of 2k Server w/SP4 on one of my
servers, make it an additional domain controller,
installed Exchange 2k enterprise addition with the active
directory connector, everything was working perfect until
the HDD crashed later that same day, all data is lost. I
rebuilt the server O/S and Exchange on another server,
gave it the same name (Used active directory edit tool to
clear out old server info) and on the new server I can't
get exchange to work. I can't create user mail boxes or
anything becaue A.D. still thinks the boxes are created,
if I make a new user and try to make a new mailbox the
box still isn't created in Exchange, all the services are
started but I can't authenticate any users via outlook.
I've also tried changing reloading the O/S with a
different computer name and rebuilding exchange, still no
luck, is there anyway I can completely clear out all
exchange info from A.D.? That answer and any other
insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
