I've got a serious problem with the Exchange Routing Engine (Exchange
2000), it just won't start. First it worked real fine but since I've
reinstalled IIS I've got all these problems.

Here is the system event log entry:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 5/8/2003
Time: 12:30:09 AM
User: N/A
Computer: UIL
Description:
The Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service terminated with the
following
error:
The system cannot find the path specified.

Here is a possible event that might go along with this in the
Application
log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: RESVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 116
Date: 5/8/2003
Time: 12:30:09 AM
User: N/A
Computer: UIL
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 116 ) in Source ( RESVC ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. The following information is part of the event: /LM/RESVC/.
Data:
0000: 03 00 00 00 ....

I used the Microsoft KBs articles titled, in order:
1 - XADM: Exchange Databases Are Not Mounted and Event Logs Contain
Error Messages 2 - XIMS: Cannot Send Mail After Re-Installing the IIS
SMTP Service 3 - XCON: Exchange Routing Engine Service Does Not Start
Automatically or Manually after you remove IIS and Then Reinstall It

I have performed the steps accurately in those articles, which
basically states what the user "MS" below had performed and now I am
sitting here with an exchange server that cannot start its routing
engine. Please help!

So far I have done the following.
Reinstall Microsoft Exchange server.
Service Pack. same result.

next I..

uninstall all of IIS
Reinstall IIS
Reinstall Exchange 2000.
service pack.

Still nothing,

I'm getting quite desperate...
anybody any ideas?

Hi Jan,
Normally the unistall and reinstall of IIS and Exchange would take care of
this q320202...I would recommend you call microsoft support, it would appear
the uninstall/reinstall is not going cleanly. Be sure all virus scan is
stopped and disabled and after the unistall of IIS confirm that the
Winnt\System32\Inetsrv\metabase.bin has been removed.
Any errors reported durng the renistall of Exchange?

Hi,

If you have reinstalled IIS then you must do a Re-installation of Exchange
2000.

The reason for the routing engine is that the exchange setup adds some
values in the the metabase for the Routing engine service. IF you have
performed a reinstall of IIS, then the metabase is new and does not have
the Routing Engine values thus the error message "The system cannot find
the path specified."

At at Meeting at MS recently some advise was that SP4 can cause some issues.
Try removing and reinstalling SP4 for windows as this may help.

8. Exchange Routing Engine service not start

In my company, exchange 2003 and IIS 6.0 are installed in windows 2003 sbs
premium server. We are receiving the emails from service verifier by pop3
connector. Except exchange roting engine service, all the service are
working after the server opening the error 1083. According to information
that i gained from internet , in order to solve the problem. Exchange and
IIS servers must be reinstalled. Is there any other solution instead of
reinstalling exchange and iis server?
