Word VBA >> Creating Auto Section Headers

by Christian » Fri, 30 Jul 2004 02:21:57 GMT

I use Word 2000 to create time lines of criminal
investigation, which often exceed 50 pages in length.
Because of the extensive detail in which each event is
described, it is not uncommon for several pages in a row
to be without a section heading. This results in reader
often loosing track of where they are chronologically in
the document. Therefore, I am trying to figure out a way
to print the most recent Level 1 section heading, which is
the date, as a header atop each page. This would allow the
reader to see where they are at anytime, just as one can
do by referencing the top of a page in a dictionary and
seeing the first and last words listed on the page.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Christian,

The STYLEREF field does exactly what you want. Check it out in Word help.

1. keep section header (higher section) together with lower section footer

I have an inventory report that shows item Category, Sub-Category, and
the Item.

Grouped by each.

I show the Category header (just a title) with the Sub-Category footer
(all summary info). This gives me everything I need to see and things
look great.....except for when the Header doesn't stay with the
Footer.

I've tried putting the Header title with the Footer section, but it
duplicates even when I check the box in format section box.

Is there a way to keep these two together? I've tried the previous or
next and that doesn't work. I'm stumped.

2. Auto Section name in header footer

3. Use header/footer that auto puts in SECTION name

Can you name SECTIONS or PAGE BREAKS? Like you can name worksheet tabs in
Excel, can you name sections/page breaks so that when you print the document
the header/footer will be programmed to automatically put in the section/page
break name?

I have a document broken down using page breaks. Each page break starts a
new area of data (i.e. marketing, manufacturing, contacts, etc). How can I
have these new sections print in the footer?

7. Section header on subsequent pages of section

Hi! I am writing a technical guide that is about 100 pages. Each section has
a nice section header with a black line at the top of the page. I would like
this section header to be at the top of each page of the section. Right now
this section header does not appear on the 2nd, 3rd, etc. page of the
section.

Is there a way to do this?
Thanks, Varvara
