graphics >> Linked Images, SmartArt graphics in Word 2007 .docx format

If I have large number of links to Image files I cannot use the Edit Links
dialog in .docx format since the selection is never on the selected image. In
other words I have lost the reference to the image and hence there is no
practical way to find out which image in the Links list corresponds to my
selected image.
If I want to use smartart graphics in my book I have limited capabilities in
compatability mode.

For any reasonable book, smartart graphics and images are a must - Word
cannot be used in this context for book authoring? This is a serious
limitation.

When I have a linked image selected and access the Links dialog from the
Office Menu>Prepare>Edit Links to Files, the link that is highlighted in the
dialog is that for the image that I have selected.

I have done a Insert.Picture to get to "Insert Picture" Dialog.
I click on the drop down next to Insert and explicitly select the "Link To
File" command. If I Link three pictures this way, select the middle one, in
the Links dialog (accessed the way you have specified below or throught he
hot keys Alt+E+k) the selection is on the first item in the list always.

Am I missing something?
Thanks, Jayawanth

After some experimentation, I found the following:
Insert QuickParts.Field.LinksAndReferences.IncludePicture and then typing in
the name of the file (there is no way to browse to a file) inserts \d
immediately after the INSERTPICTURE.

Using Insert.Picture, the \d switch appears at the end in the INSERTPICTURE
command.

When I manually changed some of my links to have \d earlier now I am able to
see the selection properly in the dialog box.

Thanks for digging into the nuances. The same question earlier was not
resolved and I was endlessly waiting for a Word update. This way I can take
it forward. What a relief!

ne more idiosyncracy:
In .docx file, Insert.Picture 3 images, choosing Link to File in the
InsertPicture dialog box. select the middle image. In the Links dialog the
selected link is not highlighted, the firs item in the list is highlighted.
Also Shift+F9 does not show any field codes, I presume word is using some
other way (rather than the old INSERTPICTURE method).

Question: What is the right way to link images in 2007? What is the right UI
to access these image links for changing the link etc? I would very much like
to use .docx file for the book and do things the clean way.

1. Breaking Image Links in Word 2007

I have created a rather large document in Word with linked images. I do this
for various reasons, particularly to allow future updates. However, my boss
has asked that I create a version of this document with embedded images. So
be it. I know that with previous versions of Word, I could do this through
the Edit menu, but that's been blown away (along with a lot of other good
stuff, IMO) in Word 2007.

A look at the MSWord help file says

1. Right-click the icon or object, point to object type Object (for example,
Linked Worksheet Object), and then click Links.
2. Click Break Link.

Well, when I right-click an image, there is no "object type" displayed on
the pop-up menu. So: Am I looking in the wrong place? What am I doing wrong,
or is the help file of no use whatsoever?

Also, is there a way to break all the links in the document at one time? If
I could even do one, I suppose I could record a macro to do the same thing
for all the images, but I can't even do one with the instructions given in
the help system.

Very confused,
Andy

3. Word 2007 SmartArt randomly changes colors/themes

Greetings,

Question 1:
I created a series of SmartArt objects in Excel, I then copied and pasted
those SmartArt objects into Word.

The SmartArt objects all changed colors. How can I "force" Word to accept
these shapes without changing colors?

Question 2: (perhaps related to question above?)
In Word, my SmartArt seems to lack any robust colorful themes. The themes
are all drab greys and blues.

How can I "add" more themes to my SmartArt pallette in Word?

Many thanks for your help.

Are driving me mad. I have set the font and the background colour for all
the boxes. When I add another box it remembers my changes to the background
colour but puts the text (in the added box) in the original font which is
very large. I know you are meant to add all the boxes you need, which I did,
but then the org chart changed. How do I set this? If anyone has found good

am also having difficulty adding boxes, particularly as we have two managers,

7. Word 2007 changes format of inserted Visio 2007 object

I have a Visio 2007 org chart inserted into W2007. When in Word, I change
text wrapping from "in front of text" to "in-line text," all the drawing's
bullets change from round filled circles to unfilled squares. YUK!

I need this editable within Word for other users and so do not want to place
a picture of the same drawing instead. Any ideas on why is this happening and
how can I prevent this?
