print_fax >> I want to set my printer to default to "use printer online"

by Lorri » Sat, 13 Sep 2003 14:38:03 GMT

I just installed new computer with windows xp home. I
printed without a problem yesterday after setup, but
today I cannot print anything.

I would like the printer which I have selected as my
default printer, to remain online always. It keeps
switching back to "use printer offline".

Thanks
Lorri

Hi,

I have two Dell desktops that share printers on a wireless network.
Once I make both printers shareable on the network, I set the Epson
ML-1650 Printer as default for my computer and the Epson Stylus Photo
RX500 as default for the other computer. Then I try to print a Word
doc, and File->Print indicates the correct printer on each machine as
the default. I can also see the shared printers on the pulldown list.

However, when I open up some other doc to print, the default keeps
reverting back to the Epson Stylus Photo RX500 on my computer, but
interestingly (read frustratingly) the other computer keeps the RX500
as its default.

Other than a poltergeist, why would my computer keep resetting the
default printer to the other computer's printer?

8. Network printer only prints if set as "Default Printer"

I've got 5 computers on a network. There's no server, I just used the
standard XP home/small office networking setup. We've got a couple of
printers, each attached to a specific computer. Those work locally and
shared.

I am now trying to use an HP 2600n, which has network capability. It
was originally installed from a computer at my boss's house. That
computer and printer are now here at the office, hooked into our
router. The printer is ONLY physically hooked into the router, there
are no USB or Parallel connections in use.

The printer worked fine from the "boss" computer. Then I use "add a
printer" on one of the other computers. It found the HP, but the
"path" contained the name of the "boss" computer. I've never used a
network printer before, but I expected it to show up as an independent
unit. Nonehtless, I told it to add that printer. It seemed to work,
but when I try to print to it, the command seems to go nowhere.
There's no error message, no print icon in the tray and no activity at
the printer.

If I make the HP the default printer on the remote computer everything
works perfectly. But that's a pain in the behind. Is there some other
way to fix it so it will work just as the temporarily "chosen"
printer, not the default?

Thanks in advance
