print_fax >> Utilizing my fax and Modem on one phone line

by Tanya Probst » Fri, 19 Sep 2003 23:30:57 GMT

We are on dial up here and our scanner/printer/fax is
through our computer on one phone line. The phone line
does have 3-way and call waiting on it. I am able to
utilize my fax to send and receive as long as I am off
line. I have set up a free fax account to get my
incomming faxes so I do not miss anything.

My question is...
Is there anyway I can configure my system so that it
automatically switches over and utilizes my 3-way service
to send/receive faxes without having to go offline to do
so?

Any information on how to do this or if it is even
possible would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very
much in advance.

Sincerely,
Tanya

The short answer to your question is no, you need a second phone line.
Just as you can't use your fax when you're talking to someone, you also
can't use your fax when your computer is talking to another computer --
that is, when you're online.

Three-way calling has nothing to do with it -- that's just a mini
conference call. See, e.g.,
http://www22.verizon.com/ForYourHome/SAS/ProdDesc.asp?ID=511&CategoryID=921&state=ny

With 3-way calling "You" can talk to "Friend 1" and "Friend 2" at the
same time. But "You" can only be ONE (at a time) of a person, a
computer, or a fax machine (and both the computer and the fax would get
very confused if either was connected to two computers (or two faxes) at
the same time).

When I connect the phone line to modem, we can't receive or send phone

was busy.

Since I only have one telephone line into my home, is it possible to connect an answering machine at one outlet to receive voice messages and my computer at another outlet in order to receive faxes via Microsoft Fax? In other words, if I set up Fax to auto-receive is the system capable of recognizing and receiving data calls and ignoring voice calls, which can then be handled by my answering machine.
