print_fax >> Local Printer Installs

Hi-
Can anyone tell me if Windows XP Professional will allow a
USER (someone with no eleveated permissions) to install a
locally connected printer?! I understand that the Local
option is grayed out when using the Add Printer Wizard,
however, since Windows XP in Plug-and-Play aware will a
locally connected printer queue automatically get created
when the USER logs in?
Thank you,
-Stephan

The users on my LAN are not able to install Local Printer becos they do not
have Local User Profiles and cannot logon locally, anything they need to
install they call the IT crew.
I am trying to set up a Restricted Group Policy on my Server. I created an
OU and moved the computers to that OU. I want these computer users to have
permission to install their local printers without admin intervention.
How can I configure this on my AD 2003 Server via the Restricted Group
Policy? I am tryning but cannot seem to find any articles on the net. This
is a test setup I am using.
Thank you in advance.
Please advise.

3. Local Printer Install w/o Admin
We have a locked down XP SP2 build like everyone else, with users not having
local admin. Our laptop users require that they be able to install their
local printer when they are at home or whatever. I have this solved by
adding the users to the local power users group, which is fine, and allows
them to install a local printer. BUT...that only works fine if you go
through the add printers wizard to install it. A lot of newer printers like
HP give you a software CD that has to install a bunch of stuff on the
machine, and also requires you to do this before you plug the USB printer in
to the computer. So, without admin rights, this fails, the printer won't
install, and the user views this as I can't install my printer.
So, is there any way to get around this to allow this software to install
without admin rights? I'm guessing not, but maybe someone has come up with
something. I guess we could figure out some kind of RUN AS script, but
without knowing the executable, that might be kind of tough.
Thanks
