Windows Small Business Server(SBS) >> Can't view faxes in Companyweb.

by bXJlY29tbTEwMQ » Tue, 15 Aug 2006 08:54:01 GMT

I have faxes going directly into the "Incoming Faxes" library in the
CompanyWeb website. All of our Users that connect remotely from a WinTerm
cannot view these faxes. They get the error "Unable to open file
"D:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\GXCBWZCV\1C6BFEA4EF80F(1).tif". Check file name and
permissions."

I checked the permissions for the entire "Local Settings" folder and its
wide open. I could not however, find a "Content.IE5" folder in the Temporary
Internet Files folder.

Also, In the Temporary Internet Files folder, the Properties shows the "read
only" box checked. I un-checked it, waited for it to process all of the files
and tried to view a fax - couldn't. I looked at the properties again and the
"read-only" box was rechecked.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

i Steve,

Thanks for posting here.

From your description, I understand the issue is that remote users can not
access faxes on the SBS server box. If I am off base, please don't hesitate
to let me know.

You cannot change the Read-only or System attributes of a folder by using
the Properties dialog box for the Temporary Internet Files folder.
Actually, it is a by designed behavior in Windows XP and Windows Server
2003 systems. Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only
attribute for a folder is ignored by Windows XP/2003 systems.

Detailed information is addressed in the following article:

326549 You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of
Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326549

To the unable to open fax files problem, it should be permissions issue. We
can modify the folder permissions to assign Read permission to Everyone to
resolve the issue since you need let remote users to access the folder.
However it is not appropriate to make all users access Administrator's
profile. I would like to suggest that we also configure SBS fax to route
incoming faxes to a shared folder and grant Everyone Read permission on the
folder.

To do this:

I. Create a shared folder and grant NTFS permissions and the Sharing
permissions as follows:

A: NTFS permissions:

Domain Admin: Full Control

Domain Users: Special - Apply onto "This folder and files" -
Allow: Traverse Folder/Execute Files, List Folder/Read Data, Read
Attributes, Read Extended Attributes, Create Folders/Append Data, Read
Permissions

System: Full Control

SBS Folder Operators: Full Control

Everyone: Read, Read& Execute (other permissions according to your needs)

B: Sharing permissions:

Domain Admins, Domain Users, SBS Folder Operators, Everyone: Full Control

II. Run Fax Configuration Wizard to route to the shared folder. The steps:

1. Click Fax node in Server Management console. Then click Configure Faxes
Services in right panel.

2. In Inbound Fax Routing Configuration page, please choose the option of
"Store in a document library" and the option of "Store in a folder" to
route incoming fax.

3. Then follow the guide to finish fax configuration.

For more detailed information, please check into the following article:

Server 2003

a101-c3bec7512594&displaylang=en
Hope above information helps. Please let me know if you have further
question on the issue. I am happy to be of assistance to you and look
forward to your reply.

Have a nice day!

enny,

I followed your advice to the letter, but when you click on the fax in the
companyweb, it still tries to open the file from the Temporary Internet Files
folder for each user.

Any thoughts?

i Steve,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your time.

The method that I provided in my previous post to run Fax Configuration
Wizard to route to the shared folder routes incoming faxes to a shared
folder, so that remote users can access the shared folder by RDP, VPN or
RWW site.

If you would like to make remote users access the faxes through companyweb
site from internet, you may check the following information:

What user accounts the remote users are using to access the faxes in
companyweb site? Based on my research, they should use domain user accounts
to access the companyweb site. If so, domain users should have permissions
to view the faxes hold by companyweb site. I suggest that you refer to the
steps below to check the faxes library permissions:

1. On the server, open your company's internal Web site using Internet
Explorer.

2. Click Documents and Lists on the navigation bar at the top of the page.

3. In the Document Libraries section, click the fax library that configured
to hold the incoming faxes.

4. Click Modify settings and columns on the Quick Launch bar.

5. Click Change permissions for this document library in the General
Settings section.

6. In the page, checked the option "Reader" and click button "Edit
Permissions of Selected Users" to check if Domain users listed here. If
not, please add as you needed.

To edit permissions of the users who you have allowed to access this
library, select the check box for each user, click Edit Permissions of
Selected Users, change permissions in the Choose Permissions section, and
then click OK.

Then please run command "iisreset" (no quotation marks) to refresh the IIS
server to take effect changes. Then please test to see if the issue
persists.

If the issue persists, please perform the following tests and let me know
the result:

1. Please logon the SBS server with a domain admin account and try to
access the faxes through companyweb site, what is the result?

2. Please try to access the companyweb site from internet using IE and try
to access faxes through companyweb site, what is the result? If failed,
please capture a screen shot of the error message and mail to my working
mailbox: XXXX@XXXXX.COM

I appreciate your time.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

2. Companyweb/incoming faxes/explorer view asks for username and password

Hello.

I setup Faxing on SBS2003 Premium with one modem. SBS2003, SP1, ISA2004.

When at the SBS2003 console and go to the company web and click on Incoming
faxes, it shows a sample fax and i can view it. When i click on Explorer
view, it gives me a logon screen asking for a username and password. I
tried every username and password i could think of, but none of them work.

If i go to a client workstation and try it, it never gives me a logon screen
and goes right to the explorer view.

What username and password is it asking for at the console ?There are no
messages in the event log about this. I reset IE and cleared the IE cache.
I performed a reboot of the server. I reran CEICW.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

This problem just started. When faxing I can no longer preview the fax
although I can send it. On faxes on the console - sent, received, etc., the
same problem. I get a message "Application not found." If I save the
document to a completely different file, outside of the fax, I can then open
it with fax viewer, however this is very cumbersome. It also doesn't help me
to preview faxes before I send them.
