Windows Small Business Server(SBS) >> SBS and ISA

Muhammad,

ISA, Exchange, SQL etc that come with SBS can only be installed on the SBS
server itself. If you need to run ISA on a different machine then you will
need to have/purchase a server license for Windows 2000/2003 and ISA server
separately or if you have SBS 2003 Premium Edition with ISA then puchase
the Transition Pack for Premium Edition..

IMO there is practically no good reason I can think of to
do so... excluding the licensing issues.

Properly sized, optimized and configured, ISA should not
be a problem for most installations.

Exceptions... might be if you go wild configuring many,
many rules... or have less than 1 gig of memory.

I am new to Small Business Server and looking to see if I am headed in the
right direction. I need to know if SBS or ISA can be configured to route
Internal company Internet access and report usage for the purposes of
allocating costs or do I need to look at adding something else to my solution.

Sorry if this is not the place for this but I am new to this and I would
greatly appreciate any replies with suggestions of what product/s I should be
looking to research.

SBS and ISA

Don,
Here are my 2 cents. It depends on the size of the network and
complexity of application behind the firewall.
If the network is small 5-10 computers. I have found ISA to be a
overkill. Sonicwall or similar smarter routers are more easily
configured than ISA. For ISA to work properly that is packet filtering
etc you need to have two network cards on your server (External and
Internal). Last version of ISA I am using is 2000 I have heard that
version 2004 has great improvement and worth installing.
ISA definitely come handy in locking down internet access right from
active directory. Proxy, cache services nearly saves me 30% bandwidth
usage. In some cases client requests regular reports on who are the
top users and how much each is downloading. Basic ISA reports are
sufficient to provide this information.
Lately I am looking for a better hardware routers to perfrom ISA like
solution.

ISA will give you the reporting capabilities you're looking for, yes. And
yes, all internet access will route through the SBS server with ISA on it.
You'll want to ensure that your clients all use the ISA Firewall client.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I was on the right track but don't have the
time to research in the wrong direction. Nnow I can work on putting it and
the rest of the puzzle together to get approval and then start the
implementation plan.

We're installing SBS 2000 together with ISA server. No client machines, yet,
we're still battling with getting the server right. The only user is the
administrator.

Having installed the server (but before installing ISA) we have internet
connectivity. We then install ISA (from the premium edition disk) as a result
of which, and after running ICW, and logging off and on, we can't see any web
pages. The ADSL modem connects successfully to the ISP, but the only thing we
get in IE is a 502 error.

Now, we're guessing we need to do something to allow web things through ISA
but we can't see what. Can anyone point us in the right direction.

We didn't have this problem with SBS 2000 (with ISA) which seemed to work
without problem, and which is why we can post this message.

6. FTP issue with SBS adn ISA

I have a Small Business Server that has ISA as the firewall and I have a
problem trying to acces a FTP site to download antivirus signature updates.
The progrma is set to update teh sig file everyday but there is an error when
trying to connect to the FTP site. the error that comes up in the log is
1211. I am no ISA genius by no stretch but everything looks good for all FTP
ports. Is there a way to see if certain packets are getting stopped coming
in or going out out? I really have no clue why it won't connect. What do I
have to do to disable teh firewall (temporarily) to test this out? I have
this AV software that needs to be able to update and with the current setup
that's not possible. Any HELP is appreciated. Thanks

8. SBS 2k - ISA

I dont normally install ISA as SBS install however I have
done it twice now and both times ISA behaves differently
to a standard version of ISA.

The issue I am having is ISA appears to work fine ports
are locked users cannot access certain protocols etc etc

however the users can get internet access without a proxy
configuration in their IE setup.

The usual configuration of servername:8080 does not work.

Whenever I have done this normally i have always had to
use a proxyserver:portname in IE on the clients ?

is this something different with an SBS build ? do I need
to care about it seeing that its working anyway ?

oh server is dual homed direct into a router and the other
to a switch.
